Winemaker Matt Austin from Grosgrain winery in Washington is a bit of a throwback. While young and energetic personally his winemaking harkens to the “Old World” he attacks varieties and styles not often seen on the coast of the U.S. I’ve noticed a surge in cool winemaking trends in domestic also employing this tactic and breaking the mold of the ho-hum modern winemaking school of thought. Matt’s wines are filled with soul, energy, and deliciousness. If you haven’t been to Hastings yet this is a great day for a road trip.
